Overview
Voltage: 4.8V
Speed: 0.052 / 45°
Torque: 9.0 Ncm
Size / Weight: 23 x 11.4 x 24.1 mm / 9.83 g
This is a new servo from Robbe which based on its statistics looks to be designed for the T-Rex as a tail servo. This is a true micro servo rather than the mini servos typically used on the T-Rex as a tail servo (e.g. Futaba 9650). It is a very fast servo with just 0.052 seconds to travel 45° when running at 4.8 V.
This servo will be tested in conjunction with the CSM 720 running configured as a CSM 630. The test machine is a T-Rex SE V2 running at 6V so an Align step down 5.1V regulator has been used between the gyro and servo.
Flight Review
I purchased the servo on recommendation from another 3-D flyer (Rob Turnbull who also writes for T-Rex tuning). I was testing the CSM 720 gyro and getting a less than satisfactory performance from the Futaba 9650 digital servo. Knowing that the CSM 720 likes a very fast servo I expected that my issues were down to the relatively slow speed of the Futaba 9650.
Having fitted the servo a couple of check flights were required to get the gain settings configured correctly. With the new servos installed I was able to increase the gain on the CSM 720 significantly. Having got it set such that gain was as high as it would go without wagging the testing could begin.
The performance from the servo is nothing short of outstanding. I have never run a tail servo on the T-Rex 450 that gives you this level of confidence in the tail. In fact this isn't quite true, I did get a comparable performance when using a full size Futaba 9254 but this is not exactly practical and very heavy.
This servo matched to the CSM 720 provides the most competent tail system I have ever experienced on a micro helicopter. Pirouettes are beautifully consistent with no whipping and the stops from pirouettes and holding power are excellent. I have to say I am very impressed.
Having now got an extremely competent tail system my flying with the T-Rex 450 SE V2 has moved to another level. Chaos and pirouetting manoeuvres are now well within grasp and don't leave me nervous that the tail system will blow out at any moment.
Rob Turnbull has his servo running on the GY401 and reports equally outstanding performance running in DS mode.
I have run this servo for a significant number of flights and it shows no signs of giving up, so I believe it also has longevity as a tail solution on the T-Rex 450.
Pros
Very small and lightweight
Very fast
Very good hold
Has run many flights and still going strong
Relatively cheap
Cons
4.8V only
Conclusion
An excellent tail servo, certainly the best I've tried so far and that includes the expensive Futaba 9650 which the Robbe servo blows away with it's performance. Finally a micro servo that delivers, very fast, good hold and a reasonable price. What more could you want?
